WHAT IT IS
Less space for the nerve roots
Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the canal through which nerves pass towards the legs. It usually develops gradually as a result of degenerative changes in the discs, joints and ligaments. The degree of narrowing seen on MRI does not always match the symptoms.
- Pain, tingling or weakness in one or both legs.
- Cramping or heaviness when walking that makes you stop.
- Relief when sitting down or leaning forwards.
- Increasing difficulty standing or walking your usual distances.
ASSESSMENT AND OPTIONS
A plan to improve your mobility
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, a neurological examination and imaging. Initial treatment may include changes to activity, rehabilitation, medication or injections when indicated.
If difficulty walking or pain persists despite conservative measures, surgical decompression may be considered. In some patients, this can be performed using endoscopic techniques or minimally invasive techniques. Instability, deformity or other findings may require a different approach.
- A tailored exercise and functional recovery plan.
- Medication prescribed by the treating clinician.
- Injections in selected situations.
- Decompression when justified by the symptoms and anatomy.
